Date: 2004-11-29 | Rating: 5 Cars, or new ones, anyway, should be able to do one thing: move people from one place to another. If it can't do that, it's not a car, and I find it reasonable to expect my car to do it. Of course, I have the choice of riding around in a Geo Metro, or in a Porsche, but at their core, they do the same thing. Similarly, I believe that any rice cooker, not just a 150 dollar rice cooker, should produce well-cooked rice every time it's used. Common sense tells me that manufacturers test these things hundreds of times before putting them into production, and so by the time it's on my counter, it should be pretty much foolproof. Reality doesn't agree with me, however. For four years, I've tried 6 or 7 different rice cookers with varied success. The type of rice that I make, sticky Japanese rice, is part of the problem. Most rice cookers in the United States are designed for long-grain, non-sticky rice, and so most US brands (e.g. Rival, Faberware, etc.) produce dry and/or unevenly cooked calrose rice. The only success I had in the past was an old Panasonic rice cooker, inherited from my father. Sadly, I damaged the bowl about a year ago, and it stopped working. After that, I tried making rice on the stove, but measuring out the water and rice to the same level every time frustrated me. I had heard about fuzzy logic rice cookers a number of years ago, and, after working in an appliance store for a few months, I decided to buy one about two weeks ago. It works, and works well. Although I haven't tried out the timer function, and I'm a little wary to put any piece of my $150 rice cooker into the dishwasher, I give it my recommendation. If you need a general rice cooker that adapts well to any kind of rice you put in it and have 150 bucks to spare, invest in this product. There are a few other brands of fuzzy logic rice cookers out there, and I imagine that they all do the job and do it well. I've sold comparable products to my customers, and I've only heard praise for them. The Panasonic/National brand was the cheapest I could find, and it works just fine for me. So, in short, If you're shopping for a new one, skip the Geo and get the Porsche; skip the cheap stuff, and put your money into something that does the job right. Works extremely well for me Date: 2006-10-25 | Rating: 5 I've been using this rice cooker for quite a while, mainly to cook oat groats on the "porridge" setting. They take a while to cook, so if your mornings are hurried, I would definitely set them up the night before and use the timer to start them an hour before you awake. The cooker will keep them warm quite well. (1/3 cup oat groats, 1 cup of water for one person, with the result being more like a cooked grain than traditional oatmeal.) The brown rice setting doesn't do "keep warm", as the manual says: you need to take that out when done. I've had no problem with the cooking pot chipping, but I use only the plastic spatula that came with it to dip stuff out, or a nylon spoon: no metal. And I wash the cooking pot (removeable, nonstick) by hand: very easy, very quick. The steamer function is not worth the effort: tends to overcook. The risotto recipes I done have worked great. (I got "The Ultimate Rice Cooker Cookbook," which has many good recipes.) Happy, happy! Date: 2010-01-04 | Rating: 5 I bought this cooker about a year ago and have been very, very pleased. It does what we need, when we need it - no problems. The timer was easy to figure out and has been such a boon for our family. We wake up to oatmeal, perfectly cooked! I totally reccommend this rice cooker. Another reviewer has experienced a chipping problem concerning the basin. We ONLY use the platic spoon provided. I, too, am sensitive to my family eating any non-stick coating pieces and will update this review if we see a problem. The inside pot get chipped easily Date: 2004-12-28 | Rating: 2 The most important part of choosing a rice cooker is to pick one that has a good quality inside pot because if this 'non-stick coated inner pan' chiped, you are so not going to keep using it since you will worry if you will eat that 'chips' with rice. Sure this cooker works for me for about 3 years, but right after one year, the inner pan began to chip. I have two other neighbors who also bought this one and have chipped inner pan. They just told me to ignore it. But after reading a few healthy related articles, I decide to throw this $100 rice cooker away and buy another one. I can't risk my family's health on $100. I got a new one from Sanyo which cost around $90 for 5 cups. I especially did research on their inner pan. Apparently their pan has special technology on coating so it should has no problem. I will see. But from the look, I can tell that Sanyo's inner pan has better quality. If you plan to spend $100 on rice cooker, you should either try Sanyo or Zojirushi. Also you can get a better deal at Chinese grocery store (I mean big ones). The only problem at Chinese store is you have to exchange in 7 days not 30 days, and you can't return if you used it. I bought both of my rice cookers at chinese store and they did not have any problems.

This was the one I selected, primarily due to its ability to make five different styles of rice (porridge, sushi, ordinary, shorter cooked ordinary, and brown. I really didn't need all the capacity. Normally I make 1 to 3 cups. This was a year and a half ago, so the machine cost almost twice as much as it does now. I was delighted with it, and it is still doing regular duty. For most purposes you select how you want the rice cooked. Press start, and walk away. Come back in about an hour, and everything is just perfect. I have since mastered its ability to set customized cooking times and have been making everything from Rice-a-Roni to chicken curry. I really would hate to be without it. It's still four times what a cheap cooker costs, but I think you will find the difference worth it in the long run. going fast-glad I got one Date: 2006-01-04 | Rating: 5 I have been wanting a fuzzy logic rice cooker for some time and decided to get one of these. It looks like they may be about to be discontinued as the price keeps going down and Panasonic is not coming out with a newer model to compete with the newer Zojirushi's. I bought it because I like Panasonic and the price was right. This is a nice 5 cup model with regular rice, quick, reheat, porridge, and steam functions. It comes with a nice steam basket and measuring cup. So far, it have had nothing but perfect rice in it, although the wait is a little longer than the traditional old style cookers. It is easy to clean with no removable parts. The bowel is roomy and nonstick. It is a traditional white enclosed design that is more compact than the picture looks. I think I got a good deal on a fuzzy logic cooker from a well-thought-of company. Get one while you can! Great rice cooker! Date: 2005-02-17 | Rating: 5 This is my first rice cooker, although I've used my friend's so had the basic idea of what they could do. I can't believe how easy this thing is and how perfect everything comes out! With nothing required from me in terms of figuring out how long to set it (although I've learned to start it early since it does a nice job of keeping the rice warm, and that works better than having dinner ready but np rice!) I've done a bunch of different rices, even some boxed rice like cheesy rice and it always comes out great. I don't find the cooker hard to clean at all, although you do have to be sure not to scratch the inside of the pan with metal utensils. This isn't the roomiest so if you have a big family, might not be for you, but for cooking for a small number, it's great. Great Product!!! Date: 2007-02-23 | Rating: 5 I love this one which I have it for 3 years now. It offers a lot of good features so I think it's too good for the price. I have an infant and a todler which most of my times are for them. I need to puree a lot of baby food. This wonderful cooker helps a lot. Beside cooking rice beautifully and keep it warm. The pordrige feature does a good job in cooking chicken vegtable noodle soup (or rice pordrige) in just about 1/2 an hour. The slow cook feature does an excellent job and save me a lot of time. The steam feature helps a lot in steaming vegtable while cooking the rice....I LOVE it. I just put everything in the pot, set the time and choose the feature I want, then go on working and take care my children. I would highly recommend it. In fact, I'm looking to buy another one for my MOM and write this comment while I'm at it. I bought mine at an asian market named Marina Food. Good luck. Good Rice Cooker Date: 2004-12-19 | Rating: 4 UPDATE after 2 year's of ownership: the inner container of the unit is not as durable as that of Zujiroshi. It developed scratches after 1 year. We used the Zujiroshi unit more often and it is still smooth like new. UPDATE after one month's use: the unit also works as a slow cooker and a steamer. Cleaning is no problem. Better than I had expected. Better than my old 3-cup Zujiroshi. 5-star it should be. I bought this unit since my old 3-cup Zujiroshi one is not big enough for my family any more. The price is much lower than that of a Zujiroshi counterpart on Amazon. After using it for two days, I gave it 4 star since its design is not as convenient as my old Zujiroshi. First, Zujiroshi is easier to clean. It has a inner top lid that can be taken off and rinsed. The lid of this product will not come off and I can only wipe it. Second, Zujiroshi has a metal cooking pan and you can use it to rinse rice. This one has a plastic coated pan and the instruction manual says that you should use a different container to rinse rice. Despite these minor drawbacks, this is still a good rice cooker and we will keep it.

The Panasonic does a good job at a reasonable price. I'm glad I found it! very good Date: 2007-12-27 | Rating: 5 This rice cooker is worth the price. The rice gets cooked quickly and being a non stick cooker, the rice never sticks to the utensil. All in all, I love this cooker. Features - Jumbo rice cooker for party-size quantities of rice - Includes automatic switch-off when rice is finished - Nonstick interior simplifies cleanup and reduces sticky residue - Stainless lid; 1-touch operation; power indicator lamp - Includes 6-ounce measuring cup; safety thermal cut-off fuse Product Description Panasonic SR-42FZ 23-Cup Jumbo Rice Cooker, Silver Amazon.com Review Simple and reliable, this massive rice cooker from Panasonic makes perfect rice on a scale for parties, buffets, and large family gatherings. Easy to use and no-nonsense, the cooker includes a built-in thermostat for precise control and switches off automatically when rice is finished cooking. Its body is durable yet lightweight, and the inner pan is coated with a nonstick layer to keep rice from sticking and simplify clean up. At full capacity, the machine can handle 23 cups of uncooked rice, turning out three times that much cooked rice. Keep in mind, though, that it is standard with rice cookers to measure this amount with the included measuring cup, which holds about 6 ounces. Operating the cooker is very straightforward. It includes only one function switch and an illuminated indicator lamp to let you know that it is on. The lid is stainless steel with a built-in steam hole, and the handles are plastic to stay cool. Note that this rice cooker does not have a "keep warm" setting, though Panasonic does include a thermal fuse to cut power if the unit is overheating. --Emily Bedard

Customer Reviews Outstanding Rice Cooker better than any Zojirushi Date: 2009-11-07 | Rating: 5 I don't know what the other reviewer was doing wrong but my oatmeal came outstanding and the brown rice come out equally well. A very easy to use rice cooker with many advanced features that the Zojirushi does not have. I paid $180 dollar Zojiushi that played Mozart when the rice was done and died shortly after one year(along with a Zojirushi bread maker); I think I will stick with Panasonic which are more dependable especially having using them for the last 20 years with no problem, just great rice Item not included as advertised - Panasonic Rice Cooker handled through Ritz Camera Date: 2009-11-08 | Rating: 2 At the end of September, I ordered a Panasonic Rice Cooker from Amazon. Amazon advertised, and still advertises, at least as of today, that a Deluxe steaming basket would be included. This order from Panasonic was ordered through Ritz Camera. However, the steaming basket was not included in the order. I contacted Ritz Camera, but they insisted that the steaming basket was not originally meant to be included. I told them that it was advertised as being part of the ordered product. They told me to contact the manufacturer. A series of phone calls included connections with switchboards in India and the Philippines. (I will let Lou Dobbs deal with the issue of jobs being out-sourced to other countries while many Americans face unemployment. That is another issue.) Only a few calls were answered by home-grown Americans, even though the product is sold by Panasonic but handled by Ritz Camera. Nothing was resolved by telephone. During the last call, the phone answerer, supposedly representing the manufacturer, blamed Amazon. However, I cannot contact Amazon directly. Had Ritz Camera merely sent the steaming basket as advertised, the problem would have been terminated. However. Ritz sent me a $25 coupon which can only be redeemed for future orders, and only after purchasing something again online. The coupon is useless to me. Ritz asked me to remove my negative review, but the $25 coupon was not sufficient impetus for me to do so. Part of the attraction of the rice cooker as originally advertised was the steaming basket. I used to be in the advertising business many years ago, so I realize the seriousness of false advertising. However, I do not blame Amazon, because Amazon has always made good on problems with orders. I have been a good customer and have even written many reviews of DVD films and books. Amazon, in my view, in a good company. They make good on their promises and allow even negative reviews of films and other products to be shown to the public, unedited. I do have a problem with a product that is not delivered as advertised. Let the buyer beware. Not for oatmeal (porridge) Date: 2009-06-24 | Rating: 1 I bought this cooker for cooking brown rice and steel cut oats. The brown rice came out acceptable, but nothing to write home about. I tried oats twice and both times it was a disaster. It boiled over and caused a huge mess even though I followed the porridge instructions perfectly. Well, I think I did. It may have the worst English translation that I've ever read. "After the beef sound, the rice cooker will automatically switch to keep warm mode." Mooooo! I'm returning this thing today.

I needed a good price, since I wasn't sure how well I'd catch on, and am not a gourmet. This worked out SO perfectly--I LOVE the non stick insides. It came with the paddle, but no steamer, but I wanted this for rice and I think you can buy the steamer if you need it, separately. The only things I would advise are when you make rice (I've only ever made full pots) use 2.5 cups of rice, but fill the water line to the 3 cup line after putting the rice in the pot, and RINSE RINSE RINSE the rice before cooking, no exception. These 2 things will give you perfect rice in about 30 minutes or so. It's a little less rice output than advertised, but it doesn't take long and again, it comes out perfectly. It measures approximately 6 by 6 by 6 inches, carries a one-year warranty, and includes instructions in English, Chinese, and Vietnamese. --Emily Bedard Customer Reviews perfect for travel Date: 2008-12-05 | Rating: 5 i am a flight attendant. most of the time there is no meal service. also, we are runing from plane to plane no time to stop and get a hot meal. also, it's get expensive. room service is over-priced, and it's the same old stuff at every hotel. with this little work horse i can bring food from home and heat it up so i can have a hot meal. i have used it to heat up more than rice. i use it for soup, chili, oatmeal, even left over pasta with sauce. this may sound expensive, but will pay for itself if you use it as often as i do. Best for travelling Date: 2007-05-14 | Rating: 5 I have purchased this item about 1 month ago. I am a flight attendant and my mini rice cooker fits perfectly in my suitcase. I make 2 cups of rice every night in my hotel room et with a mold I make 3 rice balls to eat the next day. It takes about 15 minutes to make. Perfect for trips. Good luck, Louise P. rice cooker Date: 2008-03-24 | Rating: 5 The perfect rice cooker for one or two people. I have been using one for over 20 years and is still working. Perfect rice every time. Every one in my family and many friends own one. Perfect Date: 2008-11-02 | Rating: 4 Although I've only owned this cooker for a lil over a month, I feel qualified to speak to it's usefulness. A bit pricey for the capacity, it's effectiveness can't be overstated. For family of 3 or less this cooker makes plenty of rice. I especially like that it can make one serving of rice fairly quickly. No fancy electronics, just a plain timed cooker. Mix the rice and water (or stock), flip the switch and when it turns off you have perfect rice. I found domestic packaged rice like Uncle Ben's to need proportions of 1:1 water to rice. Imported sticky rice from India or Asia needs a lil less water, like .8:1. You'll find the proportions you need. I hope this cooker lasts longer than at least one reviewer claimed. Once outside the warranty period, if the timer fails (I'm sure it uses a simple bi-metal timer), I just wire in a cheap electronic timer from Radio Shack. Little expensive but perfect Date: 2008-05-16 | Rating: 4 I am using it everyday for probably 2 months and so far it is working great. I like the fature that it shutsoff after rice is cooked that is the reason I bought this for. The reason that I didn't give five stars is because I am only using it for 2 months and also I felt its a little expensive and also the shipping charges.

Customer Reviews Panasonic SR-MS102 Rice Cooker vs Sanyo ECJ-HC55S and Zojirushi NP-HBC10 Date: 2009-12-15 | Rating: 5 This rice cooker is fantastic. I bought and kept this (and returned the others) after trying this along with two other rice cookers - Zojirushi NP-HBC10 and Sanyo ECJ-HC55S. Please note that I had selected even the other two after much research and they, in their own place, are amongst the best rice cookers that you can buy. This one cooks rice as well as or better than the others and much faster. I use this mainly to cook brown rice - the Sanyo took about 90 minutes for two cups of brown rice, the Zojirushi took about (or more than) 100 minutes and this one takes just 60 - 65 minutes. This one has more functions than any other cooker (Rice cooker, steamer, slow cooker, warmer, porridge maker, cake maker, sushi and more). This one looks the best by far and its Menu and LCD are better than the others. This has a fantastically stylish smooth body with a super cool Orange LCD with Black LEDs with no ghost digits (prominent and clear black digits on Orange with no shadows from the unused digits - looks very cool and sophisticated). The colour scheme and over all look is by far the most modern and stylish. The Panasonic while being the fastest, best looking and most feature packed machine as compared to the Zojirushis and Sanyos is the one that costs the least ! The steamer tray supplied with this is better that the Sanyo's as it is deeper and does not sit on the bottom of the inner pan (mess from the tray legs dipping in the boiling water in the Sanyo) but sits on the top rim of the inner pan and hangs, with sufficient clearance from the boiling water - this is important because close proximity to the boiling water amounts to greater loss of vitamins from the vegetables being steamed. The Zojirushi does not have a steamer tray or dedicated steaming function for that matter. While the Zojirushi makes rice as well as any other machine and it has the proclaimed GABA brown rice setting, it is exorbitantly priced and takes much longer to cook. The Sanyo is priced closer to this one but the Panasonic's design, looks (style, very good LCD and colour scheme and buttons), performance (cooking time and quality of the brown rice) pleased me much more than the Sanyo's. Panasonic's electronics is unparalleled - it is evident in the details like a much better LCD screen, best readability (and aesthetics) and this one remembers your last menu choice even after being powered off (unlike the others which reset to the 'White rice' option). And, from researching on the net, I found that in general Panasonic rice cookers last much longer than any other brand. So far I have only cooked brown rice in this and it came out fantastic every time. I am eager to try out the plethora of other options available on this rice cooker and go a bit further with my creativity which is made possible by the unmatched versatility of this wonderful piece of equipment. One thing I would like to let prospective buyers know is that the inner lid on this one is aluminium (as is the Sanyo's). So, if avoiding aluminium cookware is high on your priority than this could be a concern. However, there is hardly any contact of the lid with the food and so it did not matter too much to me. The Zojirushi I bought was the top of the line amongst Zojirushis and was the only rice cooker I found which had a stainless steel (and not aluminium) inner lid. Overall, this was a winner by far in terms of unbeatable value, top quality and dependability. It brings a smile on my face everyday due to its functionality and beauty. I highly recommend this rice cooker.

Date: 2007-01-10 | Rating: 5 I am very pleased with this purchase. First of all, the non stick surface is safe, healthy, and works excellently! When I cooked my first batch of rice with this cooker I was surprised that the manual calls for a 1 to 1 ratio of water to rice. With my previous experience I thought that this was absurd and that the rice would not be cooked thouroughly. I followed the instructions and the rice was cooked to perfection! I have not used the cooker for anything else besides rice, but so far I am very pleased! It is not only much safer to the health (i.e. no aluminum in contact with the food) but the clean up is much much easier!!! good cooker Date: 2007-01-04 | Rating: 5 good cooker, very functional, works well, been using it for a year and never had a problem. Great rice cooker Date: 2007-02-05 | Rating: 5 I had used a Panasonic rice cooker that is similar to this one. It worked great for nearly 10 years and finally the non-sticky layer was worn out, so I bought this SR-G18FG 10 Cup Rice Cooker/Steamer. It works great so far just as I'd expect. I would definitely recommend this one to others. Very comfortable and great value for monry Date: 2008-09-19 | Rating: 5 Rice would not stick to the bottom! - which is AWESOME!!. Other cookers - ud have to soak it and wait for the rice to come out -. I have cooked rice for 10 people comfortably in this cooker - very efficient. The only problem i had was sometimes rice gets sticky - especially if you use the thai scented rice - i tend to leave the rice in for about 20 minutes after it turns to the keep warm mode- overall no complaints! Satify Customer Date: 2009-02-18 | Rating: 5 The look of the cooker is classy. No rice, soft or dried, stick to the non stick pan. This really helps in cleaning the pan and minimize rice wastage due to sticking. The cooked rice is fluffy. Keep warm function is a must have.

Customer Reviews Versatility Meets Style Date: 2009-05-27 | Rating: 5 The first thing that went through my mind when the Panasonic SR-MS182 Rice Cooker showed up on my doorstep was,"Where am I going to store this thing?" The box was huge! Luckily, it turns out that the unit was just extremely well packed. The unit itself is just a little bigger than my old standard rice cooker, but holds about 4 times as much. After opening the box I was struck by two things: 1.) The unit matched my modern kitchen very well and 2.)The timer and menu display was already functioning (the clock was even set right). Body of the rice cooker is very similar in design to my bread machine and combo grill/microwave. The menu being active right out of the box means to me that I do not have to worry about power outages wreaking havoc with my dinner plans. Once power returns, the unit will do what it was programmed to do, no lost memory. The unit also has a very sturdy handle. You can cook your rice in advance and then take the unit with you. You can also use the SR-MS182 to carry and keep warm any dish you are taking to your neighborhood potluck. So how well does it work? So far I've used it for steaming vegetables and baking a cake. Yes, I said a cake! Not only will the SR-MS182 make rice and steam vegetables but it is also a slow cooker and can be used to make cake and many other recipes that are included in the operating manual (would have been nice if these had been in a separate book). When steaming vegetables the screen immediately displays 10 minutes cooking time. However for large amounts of vegetables you will want to extend this time. 10 minutes was just enough time for ½ of a yellow squash and ½ of a zucchini cut into strips. The vegetables were cooked but still firm and retained a lot more flavor than boiling. To see just how good this "rice cooker" really was I decided to follow Panasonics instructions for cooking a cake. I used a standard out-of-the-box chocolate cake mix. I followed the time instructions on the box and then went about other business till the cake was done. The cake came out perfect, just as if I had made it in the oven. I set the timer as if making 2 8" rounds (40 minutes). I highly recommend the SR-MS182 to anyone that cooks rice, steams vegetables, or just wants a new, flexible kitchen gadget. If that sounds like you, then this product is well worth the money. Not Just For Rice!---it's so much more. Date: 2009-06-07 | Rating: 5 Having previously owned a Zojirushi rice cooker with fuzzy logic I am familiar with the great advantages of this technology. The appliance can actually sense the cooking of the rice. It knows when the moisture level is just right and will adjust if you add a little too much water etc. It then automatically goes to a "keep warm" mode, until you are ready to serve. This cooker has several advantages that make it a more useful product. Being able to steam a vegetable at the same time the rice is cooking is a terrific feature that we often use----The summer is hot here in Arizona and we like to limit use of the stove when the air conditioner is running. The veggies along with the rice come out to a T! Thought we would try a cake. The instruction book recipe seemed weird and wrong! We threw all caution to the wind and used a box of regular 18.25 oz. Duncan Hines Devils Food cake mix, following the instructions for ingredients.....it came out perfect. I will say it was not quite done when the cycle was over, but keeping the cake in the cooker an extra 5 minutes after it went to the keep warm mode did the trick. The cake was as high as a two layer cake (approx.3-4")and was beautifully moist. We now have cake without firing off the oven----perfect! We purchased the "Ultimate Rice Cooker Cookbook" by Beth Hensperger from Amazon which contains many recipes for soup, puddings, polenta and more which are fairly easy to prepare using the rice cooker instead of the stove. I will have to say that yes the rice comes out perfect, this cooker does so much more, including slow cooking, veggies---well, it just makes food prep easier and more enjoyable. So from here in the land where it can reach 115 in the summer I can truly recommend this product. If you do purchase this be bold, very bold and bake a cake, do a stew, steam veggies, make a pudding, let it make your life just a little easier. I think you will be impressed with your purchase, as I am, and will use it a lot..... Does more tasks than I expected! Date: 2009-07-16 | Rating: 5 First of all, the SR-MS102 is a FIVE cup cooker and the SR-MS182 is a TEN cup...the little ordering buttons on top both say "10-cup". Hopefully amazon will correct that. I wondered what the difference is between these fuzzy logic cookers and plain old rice cookers, so I looked for some info on it. What I found was, basically to cook rice, there are 4 stages: standing in water, boiling, absorbing, and resting. At each stage, heat is used differently, and with a machine such as this, it isn't just "on" but instead, it knows when to turn it up or down (based on type of rice, volume, etc. that we program in.) It also has a keep-warm setting (which I really like.) With this type of programming the machine can be used to make things like rice (of course!), but also risotto, pilaf, steel-cut oats, polenta, grits, steaming veggies or any other moist cooking, although you will likely need to experiment to you get your consistencies that are exact to your preference. My results were excellent with both white rice and veggies. The rice almost tasted sweet it was so good. There are recipes in the book for different rices, porridges, soup, slow cooking, main courses (yes, you can put meat in this...nice!) even cake (when you don't feel like heating up your whole kitchen with your oven!) I was going to upload the manual to this page (there used to be an option on amazon to do that, but I don't see it now.) You can download the product manual so you can see how it all works, options, and the recipes here: edit: I see that my link to the product manual is not posted with my review. It IS available online if you google it...in case you want more detailed instructions and pictures of features. look for the retrevo site, that is where I found it. An Excellent Choice Over Zojirushi Date: 2009-12-30 | Rating: 5 When looking for a rice cooker, I was torn between this model and a similar one by Zojirushi. What finally swayed my decision (aside from price) was a complete look at my lifestyle: I enjoy steamed vegetables, and the Zojirushi didn't offer a steaming tray. This Panasonic rice cooker is great. As soon as I opened the box, I washed the steamer basket, cooking bowl, the paddle and the measuring cup. I know one review here stated that their first few batches tasted a bit chemically. Mine did not--from the very first batch all the way to now (as of this writing I have had the rice cooker for 3 weeks) my rice has tasted excellent. Even when I made oatmeal with lots of cinnamon, a simple washing was all it took to get the cinnamon smell out of the cooking bowl. The batches of rice since then have not smelt or tasted of cinnamon. When I cooked brown rice, I used the brown rice setting as opposed to the instructions given on the separate sheet of paper included with the manual. My rice came out very well--much more tender and flavourful than any brown rice I have ever made in the past without a rice cooker. That fact alone makes this cooker a god-send to me--my significant other prefers brown rice to white for health reasons and now I can cook it in a manner that makes it taste excellent enough for me to enjoy it as well! Steaming vegetables and dumplings in the cooker couldn't be easier. Just add water to the cooking bowl, put in the steamer basket and your veggies and then select "Steamer" on the display and adjust your time. For most frozen vegetables, I have found 10 minutes to be sufficient. Also, you can steam vegetables while you cook your rice to 'kill two birds with one stone'. The longest I have left my rice in the machine on the "keep warm" setting is two days, and for that duration the rice was kept as a nice, warm temperature and it did not brown or dry out. It stayed just as delicious as it was when it was freshly made. I have yet to bake a cake in this, but I am tempted to and will probably update this review if I ever decide to test that feature. It's not necessary, no, but it is definitely something that has a 'fun' quality to it. I know some have complained about the 24-hour clock, but for me this is actually a perk to the Panasonic. As someone who prefers the 24-hour system and is more used to it, I now find myself checking the time on the Zojirushi rather than on my stove or microwave. I say this simply to give an alternate opinion on the clock--24-hour time isn't necessarily a bad thing! I do agree, however, that not being able to change the battery yourself is a downside. But, it should have a long life so I will cross that bridge when I get to it. Aesthetically speaking, this unit is not as cute as the Zojirushi (in my opinion), but is far from being an eye-sore. It has nice, sleek lines and a pleasing modern appearance to it that will most likely match any kitchen. I suppose another "downside" that has nothing to do with functionality is that it does not play any cute songs when the rice is done cooking--it merely sends out a long "beep". For those that don't want to hear "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" every time they cook rice, however, this is probably a perk. As far as cooking capacity, I did opt for the larger model. When my SO first saw it, they joked that if we ever wanted to feed a small army with rice, we've got it covered. The 10-cup capacity of this model really translates to around 20 smallish cups of COOKED rice. It's something to take into consideration if you don't feel that you will ever need that much rice, or if you don't eat a lot of rice to begin with. I wanted something that would grow with us if we ever decide to have a family, but the larger capacity is also nice when we have guests over. Plus, the steaming tray is larger which means we can steam more vegetables at once. And even though it is meant to make large capacities of rice at once time, I have had no problems making just 2-3 uncooked cups in it. The rice still turns out perfect even with the small amount of rice. All in all, I have been very pleased with my Panasonic rice cooker and have been very happy with my purchase! Miles better than my old one! Date: 2009-06-01 | Rating: 5 Well, actually, my last rice cooker wasn't even that old, it's just that it is sub par to this fantastic rice cooker - and I wasn't even aware that my Aroma 10 cup rice cooker wasn't the "cream of the crop." When I received my Panasonic rice cooker, I was so excited to see that it was pretty compact! I love the feature of the handle - it's definitely completely portable with the handle and detachable power cord. I also noticed that the time on the cooker was already set and correct! I wasn't aware of the battery feature, but the instruction booklet says that this battery for the LED screen should last the cooker about 5 years - who knows after that. My first attempt was plain old, regular white rice. It's so simple - follow the instructions of measurements - which a 5 year old could comprehend, press the menu button until "white rice" blinks, press start, and presto! I love the feature of the timer on the LED screen - once the water cooks out of the cooker, a timer will appear to let you know that there are 15 or so minutes left of cook time....which is a fantastic feature that my previous rice cooker didn't have. Another attempt was with the famed "sticky rice" - yummmmo! Perfect sushi rice if you're into making your own! Once thing I also noticed about this cooker is that the exterior of the unit does NOT get hot - yes, it's warm to the touch, but my previous one would burn your hands if you touched the exterior casing - so, this unit definitely is a bit more safe than my last rice cooker. Each attempt, my rice turned out beautifully. No burned edges or overcooked areas inside. Wonderful rice and a beautiful exterior - I love the way it jazzes up my kitchen! Very chic!! 5 stars for a wonderful appliance! ETA - I made a chicken and sausage jambalaya in this rice cooker last night and it turned out perfectly! Brown the chicken in a pot, add sausage and onions, peppers, garlic to the pot and saute until heated through - add 4 cups of rice to the rice cooker, fill cooker with 3 cups chicken broth and 1 cup of water, add herbs and seasonings - throw the chicken and sausage mixture into the cooker, and set on the "white rice" setting - the cooker does the rest!

Date: 2009-08-18 | Rating: 4 Very good quality product from Panasonic. Price is very good as I compare to a local store here. I have got it for two days and have tried cooking rice and porridges. Very easy to use. You can cook from 1 cup to 5 cup, so good for a small family. Highly recommended. First impressions Date: 2010-01-14 | Rating: 3 I just got the rice cooker yesterday. It came in excellent condition and it's very pleasant to look at. This is my first rice cooker, so I had to really study the instructions first. The instructions are not very "user-friendly" as they don't have English, French and Chinese sections, but every paragraph is written in three languages - English, then French, then Chinese. Not very easy to read, I would say, somewhat confusing. It has some recipes (recipes for sushi rice, imperial rice, steamed pork, chocolate cake), but it did not have a recipe for porridge, although there is a special setting for this. I could not resist the desire to wake up to the freshly made warm porridge with minimum efforts. Well, I woke up to the fountain of porridge around my rice cooker and started my day by cleaning up. I am pretty sure I will figure it out somehow, and this is the only thing so far that I made, so may be in a month I come back and update/upgrade my review. I am kind of disappointed by not very helpful operating instructions and the porridge disaster.

Customer Reviews Good rice cooker if you know the trick Date: 2006-10-06 | Rating: 5 I bought this rice cooker 2 months ago.(after having a problem with my old nonstick rice cooker) The reason I chose this one because I don't like Taflon nonstick surface. It'd come off no matter how you took good care of it. So far, I'm very pleased with it. I'm an Asain who eat rice everyday. I cooked as little as 2 cup or as much as 5 cup (full capacity). I never had any experience about rice stick in the bottom of the pot. However, you have to know the trick. Every time you cook rice, you have to let it stand in the pot for at least 10 to 15 minutes (after the cook button change to warm button) before taking rice out of the pot, as a result, rice will never stick. And for this price ($26.99), it's very worth my money for having perfect rice in every meal. Clean up is very easy, just soak the inner pot for several minutes before cleaning. Rare and good Date: 2008-07-01 | Rating: 5 I searched high and low for an inexpensive rice cooker that did not use any nonstick coating (the fluorocarbons shed by the nonstick is supposed to pass through the human body, but studies show trace amounts lingering for decades). This is the only one I found. I works like a charm, cooks quickly, and cleans up easily (if you soak it for about an hour before washing). Wish Panasonic or someone else would make a larger capacity in the same material. Nice cooker Date: 2007-11-03 | Rating: 5 Had to update my rice cooker as my other panasonic of over 20 years gave out. This cooker is the updated version very easy to use, works just as well. The only draw back is no steaming tray was included but my old one works in this unit and the cord is attached to the machine unlike the older versions making it a little more difficult for storage. Other than the new design the cooker is great value for the price and works nicely. Close to perfect! Date: 2008-10-03 | Rating: 5 Rest assured that the low price of this rice cooker does not mean that you'll get low quality rice. Just the opposite actually. My first rice cooker was a fancy (expensive) fuzzy logic version, and I returned it because it made awful rice. This rice cooker makes perfect rice of every variety. With brown and whole grain (or any rice that requires cooking longer than 20 minutes per bag instructions), you need to add a bit more water - approx. 1/8-1/4 cup depending on type of rice. Great little rice cooker Date: 2008-12-24 | Rating: 5 I've been using this for a couple of months now to make brown and white rice and I've been very happy with it. It's a good size for 2-4 people. It makes perfect rice if you follow the guide in the booklet that comes with it. I thoroughly rinse the rice (more on that in the next paragraph), then soak it for 30mins before cooking, then when it's done cooking I let it stand for 15 minutes. Cooking usually takes 30 minutes to an hour depending on the type and amount of rice. The rice cooker switches to "warming" mode once it's finished cooking. I would suggest you rinse your rice before cooking it, although there seems to be a debate over whether you should or not. Most rice sold in the USA is coated with extra vitamins by the producer. So, rinsing will remove the vitamins but will also remove a lot of the extra starch, making for a cleaner, lighter rice once cooked. To rinse, I put the rice in the pot, cover it with water, swirl the rice around throughly, then tilt the pot to drain the water. Repeat several times until the water stops getting cloudy as you swirl. With brown rice especially the water gets extremely cloudy. Others will tell you not to rinse rice before cooking to preserve the nutrition, so it's something you have to decide for yourself. Back to the review... I wanted a rice cooker without a non-stick coating because I'm paranoid and would rather not risk the health effects of Teflon. It takes a little extra work to clean this pot but as long as you soak it then it's not a big deal. This cooker is definitely worth the money - it's simple, works well and doesn't cost a lot. You also get the ability to steam food with it. The only bad thing about it is once it enters the warming cycle, the only way to turn it off is to unplug it. But that's really a non-issue for me and if you can live with that then you'll have a good little rice cooker.

Customer Reviews Great basic rice cooker Date: 2006-01-05 | Rating: 5 This is a really great, basic rice cooker. It doesn't have the bells and whistles of the more expensive rice cookers (no warming feature, no different settings, etc.), but it works well for cooking rice, it's compact, and reasonably priced. Prior to buying this one, we had another basic model made by another company that broke. We replaced with an identical one, and it broke as well. After going through two rice cookers, we decided to pay $5 more to get a different brand- this Panasonic. We have had no problems with it, and we also like the non-stick pot. With our old rice cooker, the rice would stick to the bottom of the pot, so we couldn't eat all of it. The Panasonic doesn't have this problem, so we can make smaller quantities of rice without wasting most of it. I have made white rice, brown rice, and quinoa in the rice cooker, and all have turned out well. works great Date: 2007-02-17 | Rating: 5 Fast easy no fuss way to make rice in a snap. The directions are a little Engrish-y. But in a nutshell: Scoop out your desired rice amount say 2 cups(using the enclosed scoop). Rinse the rice a few times in a strainer to get some of the starch out--help it from making a bubbly mess and I find it makes better sticky rice. 1.Dump rice in cooker. 2.Add water to the proper line. Two cups of rice means you add water up to the fill line 2. And yes you put in the water after the rice is already in there. 3.Turn on, wait 15 minutes for the cooker to shut off and let the rice sit unmolested for 15 minutes before eating. = perfect rice. The directions also recommend soaking the rice for 30 minutes before turning the cooker on, i never do and the rice turns out perfect...let the steam do the work and don't stir or take the lid off while cooking. Super easy clean up since the unit is non-stick. Can't ask for more at the price i love mine. Update: It's June 2008 and mine is still working great. I now don't even bother to rinse the rice first and I've never had my cooker bubble over. For making brown rice, I add a little more water than normal, say 1/4 cup. Update: 2010, still works great and after running it (the cooker base insert) through the dishwasher all these years it has not yet chipped or scratched or flaked. Great For South Beach Date: 2006-03-16 | Rating: 5 Great small, basic rice cooker. Our old rice cooker had a 3 cup minimum which was overkill for a family of 3, especially when we started eating fewer carbs. This cooker makes 1-2 cups with no fuss. perfect for 1-2 people Date: 2006-02-14 | Rating: 5 Works well for about 2 cups uncooked rice. We especially like the non-stick pan. It does sputter some liquid from the sides if you try to cook more than 2 cups. Overall, very satisfied with this purchase. It compares favorably to other cookers we've owned in the same price range and size. A Really Good Rice Cooker For Smaller Quantities of Rice Date: 2006-08-16 | Rating: 5 Works just fine. It's simple and basic, and good for cooking small quantities of rice. Just right for 2, or maybe up to 4, people. The non-stick coating makes for easy cleanup. And since it doesn't have a "warm" feature, there's even less chance of rice sticking to the bottom. The warm feature isn't really needed, since one is likely to use up what's been cooked during one's meal, before the rice gets cold. Sometimes, while cooking, the rice water will foam up and sputter out the side. Well, some varieties of rice DO create more foam than others. I don't think foaming is the fault of the rice cooker; rice just tends to foam while cooking. Try rinsing the rice several times before cooking. That usually reduces the amount of foam. Some people even soak the rice for a while before cooking, but this can be a nuisance if time is an issue. This IS a rather small cooker, so cooking 2 or more cups of uncooked rice will be more likely to cause some sputtering, although, once again, the variety of rice that you cook and whether you rinse the uncooked rice a few times first makes the difference between sputtering out or not. But really, it's not a big deal if it does! I paid just $21.85 for it from Amazon, and since the total was over $25(I ordered another item along with this cooker), I had it sent via Super Saver, which meant no shipping charge. A really good rice cooker at a really good price!
