Finally, a rice cooker that works!
Date: 2004-11-29 | Rating: 5
Cars, or new ones, anyway, should be able to do one thing: move people from one place to another. If it can't do that, it's not a car, and I find it reasonable to expect my car to do it. Of course, I have the choice of riding around in a Geo Metro, or in a Porsche, but at their core, they do the same thing. Similarly, I believe that any rice cooker, not just a 150 dollar rice cooker, should produce well-cooked rice every time it's used. Common sense tells me that manufacturers test these things hundreds of times before putting them into production, and so by the time it's on my counter, it should be pretty much foolproof. Reality doesn't agree with me, however. For four years, I've tried 6 or 7 different rice cookers with varied success. The type of rice that I make, sticky Japanese rice, is part of the problem. Most rice cookers in the United States are designed for long-grain, non-sticky rice, and so most US brands (e.g. Rival, Faberware, etc.) produce dry and/or unevenly cooked calrose rice. The only success I had in the past was an old Panasonic rice cooker, inherited from my father. Sadly, I damaged the bowl about a year ago, and it stopped working. After that, I tried making rice on the stove, but measuring out the water and rice to the same level every time frustrated me. I had heard about fuzzy logic rice cookers a number of years ago, and, after working in an appliance store for a few months, I decided to buy one about two weeks ago. It works, and works well. Although I haven't tried out the timer function, and I'm a little wary to put any piece of my $150 rice cooker into the dishwasher, I give it my recommendation. If you need a general rice cooker that adapts well to any kind of rice you put in it and have 150 bucks to spare, invest in this product. There are a few other brands of fuzzy logic rice cookers out there, and I imagine that they all do the job and do it well. I've sold comparable products to my customers, and I've only heard praise for them. The Panasonic/National brand was the cheapest I could find, and it works just fine for me. So, in short, If you're shopping for a new one, skip the Geo and get the Porsche; skip the cheap stuff, and put your money into something that does the job right.

Works extremely well for me

I've been using this rice cooker for quite a while, mainly to cook oat groats on the "porridge" setting. They take a while to cook, so if your mornings are hurried, I would definitely set them up the night before and use the timer to start them an hour before you awake. The cooker will keep them warm quite well. (1/3 cup oat groats, 1 cup of water for one person, with the result being more like a cooked grain than traditional oatmeal.) The brown rice setting doesn't do "keep warm", as the manual says: you need to take that out when done. I've had no problem with the cooking pot chipping, but I use only the plastic spatula that came with it to dip stuff out, or a nylon spoon: no metal. And I wash the cooking pot (removeable, nonstick) by hand: very easy, very quick. The steamer function is not worth the effort: tends to overcook. The risotto recipes I done have worked great. (I got "The Ultimate Rice Cooker Cookbook," which has many good recipes.)

Happy, happy!

I bought this cooker about a year ago and have been very, very pleased. It does what we need, when we need it - no problems. The timer was easy to figure out and has been such a boon for our family. We wake up to oatmeal, perfectly cooked! I totally reccommend this rice cooker. Another reviewer has experienced a chipping problem concerning the basin. We ONLY use the platic spoon provided. I, too, am sensitive to my family eating any non-stick coating pieces and will update this review if we see a problem.

The inside pot get chipped easily
Date: 2004-12-28 | Rating: 2
The most important part of choosing a rice cooker is to pick one that has a good quality inside pot because if this 'non-stick coated inner pan' chiped, you are so not going to keep using it since you will worry if you will eat that 'chips' with rice. Sure this cooker works for me for about 3 years, but right after one year, the inner pan began to chip. I have two other neighbors who also bought this one and have chipped inner pan. They just told me to ignore it. But after reading a few healthy related articles, I decide to throw this $100 rice cooker away and buy another one. I can't risk my family's health on $100. I got a new one from Sanyo which cost around $90 for 5 cups. I especially did research on their inner pan. Apparently their pan has special technology on coating so it should has no problem. I will see. But from the look, I can tell that Sanyo's inner pan has better quality. If you plan to spend $100 on rice cooker, you should either try Sanyo or Zojirushi. Also you can get a better deal at Chinese grocery store (I mean big ones). The only problem at Chinese store is you have to exchange in 7 days not 30 days, and you can't return if you used it. I bought both of my rice cookers at chinese store and they did not have any problems.

Grains of Wisdom
Date: 2004-07-26 | Rating: 5
After a long time working with a rice cooker of which the best feature was that it was cheap, I decided that one of the more exotic machines would be a great addition to my kitchen. This was the one I selected, primarily due to its ability to make five different styles of rice (porridge, sushi, ordinary, shorter cooked ordinary, and brown. I really didn't need all the capacity. Normally I make 1 to 3 cups. This was a year and a half ago, so the machine cost almost twice as much as it does now. I was delighted with it, and it is still doing regular duty. For most purposes you select how you want the rice cooked. Press start, and walk away. Come back in about an hour, and everything is just perfect. I have since mastered its ability to set customized cooking times and have been making everything from Rice-a-Roni to chicken curry. I really would hate to be without it. It's still four times what a cheap cooker costs, but I think you will find the difference worth it in the long run.

going fast-glad I got one

I have been wanting a fuzzy logic rice cooker for some time and decided to get one of these. It looks like they may be about to be discontinued as the price keeps going down and Panasonic is not coming out with a newer model to compete with the newer Zojirushi's. I bought it because I like Panasonic and the price was right. This is a nice 5 cup model with regular rice, quick, reheat, porridge, and steam functions. It comes with a nice steam basket and measuring cup. So far, it have had nothing but perfect rice in it, although the wait is a little longer than the traditional old style cookers. It is easy to clean with no removable parts. The bowel is roomy and nonstick. It is a traditional white enclosed design that is more compact than the picture looks. I think I got a good deal on a fuzzy logic cooker from a well-thought-of company. Get one while you can!

Great rice cooker!

This is my first rice cooker, although I've used my friend's so had the basic idea of what they could do. I can't believe how easy this thing is and how perfect everything comes out! With nothing required from me in terms of figuring out how long to set it (although I've learned to start it early since it does a nice job of keeping the rice warm, and that works better than having dinner ready but np rice!) I've done a bunch of different rices, even some boxed rice like cheesy rice and it always comes out great. I don't find the cooker hard to clean at all, although you do have to be sure not to scratch the inside of the pan with metal utensils. This isn't the roomiest so if you have a big family, might not be for you, but for cooking for a small number, it's great.

Great Product!!!

I love this one which I have it for 3 years now. It offers a lot of good features so I think it's too good for the price. I have an infant and a todler which most of my times are for them. I need to puree a lot of baby food. This wonderful cooker helps a lot. Beside cooking rice beautifully and keep it warm. The pordrige feature does a good job in cooking chicken vegtable noodle soup (or rice pordrige) in just about 1/2 an hour. The slow cook feature does an excellent job and save me a lot of time. The steam feature helps a lot in steaming vegtable while cooking the rice....I LOVE it. I just put everything in the pot, set the time and choose the feature I want, then go on working and take care my children. I would highly recommend it. In fact, I'm looking to buy another one for my MOM and write this comment while I'm at it. I bought mine at an asian market named Marina Food. Good luck.

Good Rice Cooker

UPDATE after 2 year's of ownership: the inner container of the unit is not as durable as that of Zujiroshi. It developed scratches after 1 year. We used the Zujiroshi unit more often and it is still smooth like new. UPDATE after one month's use: the unit also works as a slow cooker and a steamer. Cleaning is no problem. Better than I had expected. Better than my old 3-cup Zujiroshi. 5-star it should be. I bought this unit since my old 3-cup Zujiroshi one is not big enough for my family any more. The price is much lower than that of a Zujiroshi counterpart on Amazon. After using it for two days, I gave it 4 star since its design is not as convenient as my old Zujiroshi. First, Zujiroshi is easier to clean. It has a inner top lid that can be taken off and rinsed. The lid of this product will not come off and I can only wipe it. Second, Zujiroshi has a metal cooking pan and you can use it to rinse rice. This one has a plastic coated pan and the instruction manual says that you should use a different container to rinse rice. Despite these minor drawbacks, this is still a good rice cooker and we will keep it.

No sticking
Date: 2008-12-23 | Rating: 5
It's been 1 or 2 months since I have this rice cooker, and the best thing is: it doesn't stick like the one I had before (Aroma). I cooked white rice, and a whole meal of rice with veggies and chicken, and had no problems. I also used the steamer while I was cooking rice, and it was good.

Does the job
Date: 2007-07-20 | Rating: 5
I had searched for a new rice cooker locally and found that the good ones were all over $100, which was somewhat more than I wanted to pay. The Panasonic does a good job at a reasonable price. I'm glad I found it!

very good
Date: 2007-12-27 | Rating: 5
This rice cooker is worth the price. The rice gets cooked quickly and being a non stick cooker, the rice never sticks to the utensil. All in all, I love this cooker.

Panasonic Rice Cooker
Date: 2007-05-22 | Rating: 5
I was a bit wary about this product after I read other reviews. But I am happy to say I have had a good experience so far (I've only used it once). I was careful to follow the directions and the rice was cooked perfectly. It's the first time I've used a rice steamer so I don't have another experience to compare it too.

instructions lacking
Date: 2009-11-02 | Rating: 4
The instructions were useless if you never had a rice maker before. I knew nothing about them. There was not help for using brown rice. I went on recipe zaar and figured it out eventually after having to make rice pudding out of my first attempt.

Panasonic SR-42FZ 23-Cup Jumbo Rice Cooker, Silver

Amazon.com Review
Simple and reliable, this massive rice cooker from Panasonic makes perfect rice on a scale for parties, buffets, and large family gatherings. Easy to use and no-nonsense, the cooker includes a built-in thermostat for precise control and switches off automatically when rice is finished cooking. Its body is durable yet lightweight, and the inner pan is coated with a nonstick layer to keep rice from sticking and simplify clean up. At full capacity, the machine can handle 23 cups of uncooked rice, turning out three times that much cooked rice. Keep in mind, though, that it is standard with rice cookers to measure this amount with the included measuring cup, which holds about 6 ounces. Operating the cooker is very straightforward. It includes only one function switch and an illuminated indicator lamp to let you know that it is on. The lid is stainless steel with a built-in steam hole, and the handles are plastic to stay cool. Note that this rice cooker does not have a "keep warm" setting, though Panasonic does include a thermal fuse to cut power if the unit is overheating. --Emily Bedard

Outstanding Rice Cooker better than any Zojirushi
Date: 2009-11-07 | Rating: 5
I don't know what the other reviewer was doing wrong but my oatmeal came outstanding and the brown rice come out equally well. A very easy to use rice cooker with many advanced features that the Zojirushi does not have. I paid $180 dollar Zojiushi that played Mozart when the rice was done and died shortly after one year(along with a Zojirushi bread maker); I think I will stick with Panasonic which are more dependable especially having using them for the last 20 years with no problem, just great rice

Item not included as advertised - Panasonic Rice Cooker handled through Ritz Camera
Date: 2009-11-08 | Rating: 2
At the end of September, I ordered a Panasonic Rice Cooker from Amazon. Amazon advertised, and still advertises, at least as of today, that a Deluxe steaming basket would be included. This order from Panasonic was ordered through Ritz Camera. However, the steaming basket was not included in the order. I contacted Ritz Camera, but they insisted that the steaming basket was not originally meant to be included. I told them that it was advertised as being part of the ordered product. They told me to contact the manufacturer. A series of phone calls included connections with switchboards in India and the Philippines. (I will let Lou Dobbs deal with the issue of jobs being out-sourced to other countries while many Americans face unemployment. That is another issue.) Only a few calls were answered by home-grown Americans, even though the product is sold by Panasonic but handled by Ritz Camera. Nothing was resolved by telephone. During the last call, the phone answerer, supposedly representing the manufacturer, blamed Amazon. However, I cannot contact Amazon directly. Had Ritz Camera merely sent the steaming basket as advertised, the problem would have been terminated. However. Ritz sent me a $25 coupon which can only be redeemed for future orders, and only after purchasing something again online. The coupon is useless to me. Ritz asked me to remove my negative review, but the $25 coupon was not sufficient impetus for me to do so. Part of the attraction of the rice cooker as originally advertised was the steaming basket. I used to be in the advertising business many years ago, so I realize the seriousness of false advertising. However, I do not blame Amazon, because Amazon has always made good on problems with orders. I have been a good customer and have even written many reviews of DVD films and books. Amazon, in my view, in a good company. They make good on their promises and allow even negative reviews of films and other products to be shown to the public, unedited. I do have a problem with a product that is not delivered as advertised. Let the buyer beware.

Not for oatmeal (porridge)
Date: 2009-06-24 | Rating: 1
I bought this cooker for cooking brown rice and steel cut oats. The brown rice came out acceptable, but nothing to write home about. I tried oats twice and both times it was a disaster. It boiled over and caused a huge mess even though I followed the porridge instructions perfectly. Well, I think I did. It may have the worst English translation that I've ever read. "After the beef sound, the rice cooker will automatically switch to keep warm mode." Mooooo! I'm returning this thing today.
